For those of us that like to add a little something new or a wrinkle before conference, state or NCAA tournament time.
My variation of Richie Adubato “2 UP” Series we ran in New York and Washington.
Richie’s “2 UP” series put 5 on the wing to start and had 4 at the High Post. Our line-ups and personnel favored 5 slicing into the post on the run from the 5 on the wing spot more with 4 at the High Post. Email me if you want that series.
This variation is more the traditional two-wing / guard line-up with a 4 who can shoot for range and post up and 5 as a Rim Runner.

1. “2 UP” SERIES
You can run specific options like below or make the entire series READS based on where the ball enters from “1”. This allows the exploit a specific match-up you see or let the team read how the defense is guarding. Your team’s “readability” (ability to read defenses) will dictate some of this.
“2 UP 3”
Can be run to the “2” or the “3” side. To the “2” side would be “2 UP 2.”
Pass or Dribble entry.
“4” and “2” have to make reads of the defense. “4” reads “BUMP,” “2” reads “TOP,” “BASELINE” or “CURL.”
“5” and “1” have a simple DHO Rule:
“5” DHO AT “1”… BACKDOOR or HAND-OFF, Read defender.
“1” rule in BACKDOOR: Once you GO…GO, no FAKE on the BACKDOOR.
“5” PASS TO “1”… WING P & R.
“2 UP 4”
Is the “3” is denied, ball reversal read for “1”.
IF “4” is denied: “1” dribble AT “4” and circle “4” to “1’s” spot and continue.
“2 UP 5”
Is one of my personal favorites. With a “5” who can and likes to attack the rim with the dribble, this gives them an ISO in the middle of the floor with action around them to occupy help. I like to come out of a timeout and switch “3” and “5” and run this to ISO “3” in the middle of the floor, “2” FLARE “4” and “5” FLARE “1” and let them play out of it.
Richie Adubato was the master at stealing points and possessions coming out of timeouts. A small variation to a successful play would create confusion and open shot opportunities.
